In 2017 the world added more renewable capacity than new fossil fuel generation: 70 percent of net additions to global generating capacity (REN21)
WORLDWIDE RENEWABLE CAPACITY
Renewable power generation capacity had its largest annual increase yet in 2017, with an estimated 178 gigawatts (GW) of capacity added. New solar photovoltaic capacity reached a record 98 GW in 2017, up 29 percent from the previous year, while new wind capacity was at 52 GW, 4 percent lower than in 2016. The record amount was primarily attributed to costs of wind and solar becoming even more competitive with fossil fuels (e.g., PV systems were 25% cheaper than two years previously). Total global renewable power capacity, including hydropower, rose to 2,195 GW in 2017 from 2,017 GW in the previous year.
WORLDWIDE RENEWABLE INVESTMENT
“New investment in clean energy reached $333.5 billion last year, up 3% from a revised $324.6 billion in 2016 and the second highest annual figure ever” (Bloomberg). Investment in clean energy is more than twice new fossil fuel and nuclear power capacity. Global investment in the Renewable Energy sector between 2004 and 2016 was US$2.5 Trillion (Renewable Energy Investment Report).
